Council strengthens policy compliance

Cardiff Council has selected NETconsent’s market-leading automated policy management software to manage its policies and procedures.

The driving force behind this purchase was the Department of Work and Pensions requirement for local authorities in England & Wales to transmit restricted data via the Government Connect Secure Extranet (GCSx).

Data breaches to incur £500,000 penalty

New powers, designed to deter personal data security breaches, are expected to come into force on 6 April 2010. The Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) will be able to order organisations to pay up to £500,000 as a penalty for serious breaches of the Data Protection Act.

Anyone who processes personal information must comply with the eight principles set out in the Data Protection Act. An organisation's internal data protection policy should be communicated to its employees.

The Commissioner is more likely to consider that the data controller has taken reasonable steps to prevent contravention of the Data Protection Act if there is evidence, such as appropriate policies, procedures, practices or processes in place.
